Coast Guard Responds to Leaking Barge

SAN FRANCISCO – The Coast Guard is responding to a report of a sheen in the Alviso Slough, near San Jose, this afternoon.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a report of a barge leaking diesel fuel early this morning and deployed its pollution responders to the scene.

San Jose Fire and hazardous materials crew deployed absorbent pads and containment boom around the sheen. The National Response Corporation has been hired to provide a vessel assessment of the barge. The Coast Guard is working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, San Jose Fire Department, NRC and the local harbor master to minimize any harmful effects to the environment and protect the senstive site.
