MORRO BAY, Calif – The Coast Guard responded this afternoon, July 1, to a report of an overturned kayak with a possible person in the surf about a half mile off of Cambria State Beach, 20 miles north of Morro Bay, Calif.

A 47-foot motor life boat from Coast Guard Station Morro Bay and a HH-65C Dolphin Helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles were dispatched to the scene as well as rescuers from Cambria Fire Rescue, California Highway Patrol and the California Dept of Fish & Game.

The original report came in from a citizen stating that there was an overturned kayak in the surf and that two persons were diving off the kayak. However only one person was recovered.

According to the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Department it appeared the man was “free diving.” The person’s body was found in the surf by rescuers who transported him to the area of Moonstone Bridge where he was pronounced dead by emergency personnel.
