PORTSMOUTH, Va. (D5 Public Affairs) – The Coast Guard responded to a crashed helicopter in Northumberland County, Va., today.
Coast Guard watch standers at Rescue Coordination Center Norfolk were contacted by the Virginia Marine Police and Northumberland County Sherriff’s Department requesting assistance in rescuing two people from a helicopter that crashed in a marsh approximately 5 miles south of Chesapeake Beach, Va.
A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., was dispatched to the scene and hoisted the two person crew from the helicopter.
The two were recovered in good condition and transported to the Middlesex County Airport in Topping, Va., where they were turned over to awaiting EMS personnel for treatment.
“We work and train with our agency partners to respond to these types of emergencies. Our close cooperation with the Virginia Marine Police and Northumberland County Sherriff’s department was a key factor in this successful rescue,” said Lt.j.g.
