Coast Guard responds to helicopter crash in East River

Coast Guard District 1 NewsNEW YORK – The Coast Guard responded to a helicopter crash in the New York East River today.

Coast Guard Sector New York received notification at approximately 3:35 p.m. of the incident with five people onboard.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station New York was deployed to the site to assist the search for one person not immediately rescued. The fifth was reportedly recovered dead by non Coast Guard divers at approximately 5 p.m.

“We’ve closed that section of the East River to commercial traffic in the interest of safety,” said Cmdr. Kenneth Pierro, Coast Guard Sector New York. “We will maintain an area around the site until salvage efforts have been completed.”

Coast Guard investigators are on the way to the scene.

Coast Guard Cutter Tiger Shark, Coast Guard Cutter Sturgeon Bay and a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station New York will remain on scene to assist investigators, enforce the safety area and assist salvage operations.
