KODIAK, Alaska – Coast Guard crews are responding to the 58-foot Kodiak-based fishing vessel TerriGail which went aground in Alimuda Bay southwest of Makushin Bay on Unalaska Island Tuesday.
The vessel grounded at 2:50 p.m. with reportedly 800 gallons of diesel fuel aboard after the crew was safely hoisted and transferred to the Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau by a Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak-based HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew forward deployed to the cutter.
The helicopter crew working with Marine Safety Detachment Unalaska personnel are scheduled to conduct an over-flight Tuesday evening to assess any environmental impact. The Coast Guard is scheduled to fly again over of the area Wednesday morning.
Weather conditions in the area currently make it unsafe for any salvage operations. The weather on scene is reportedly 50 mph winds with 10 foot seas and is expected to increase within the next six to eight hours.
The Coast Guard and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation are working together to monitor the fishing vessel and any future salvage operations.
No signs of pollution or injuries have been reported.
