Coast Guard Responds to Flooding in Missouri

ST. LOUIS -Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River activated its Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) after a request for assistance was received from the State of Missouri’s Emergency Operations Center.

At approximately 8 p.m. yesterday, the Missouri’s EOC contacted the Coast Guard’s command center and requested the assistance. As of 9 a.m. this morning, three DARTs have been deployed to southeast Missouri. Two of the DARTs are currently assisting with local flood response in Piedmont and Van Buren, Missouri. In addition to the DARTs, two Coast Guard aircraft have been mobilized for state and local support.

A DART consists of three flat bottom boats known as flood punts, capable of navigating in shallow flood waters. Eight crewman trained in flood response accompany each DART.
