Coast Guard responds to flare sighting, seeks public assistance

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Coast Guard crews are searching Deer Isle, Maine, and Stonington Harbor, Maine, tonight after receiving reports of a flare sighting in the area.

The Maine State police contacted Coast Guard Sector Northern New England after receiving calls from two people who saw a single, red parachute flare.

A 25-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Rockland and a 41-foot boat crew from Station Southwest Harbor are searching the area for a possible boater in distress.

Visibility is currently about 10 yards, preventing aircrafts from joining the search.
