Coast Guard responds to fatal boating accident near Hatteras Inlet, N.C.

HATTERAS INLET, N.C. – A Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet boat crew recovered a man’s body after Good Samaritans rescued the other five people from a capsized boat just outside of Hatteras Inlet Saturday afternoon.

Good Samaritans aboard two boats recovered the five people in the water at about 4 p.m. and called Station Hatteras on their marine band VHF radio. The station’s boat crew recovered the unconscious person with their 25-foot response boat and began CPR. The man was taken back to the station where EMS pronounced him deceased.

Tow Boat U.S. is planning to recover the capsized 23-foot charter boat Tide Runner.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating the cause of the accident.
