Coast Guard responds to drifting barges

Boonville, Mo. – The Coast Guard is responding to reports this morning that a two barges have broke their moorings and are drifting down the Missouri River here.

Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River received a call reporting the drifting barges at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, stating that one, 120-foot restaurant barge and one attached, 60-foot, empty fuel barge where drifting down river towards Boonville, Mo.

The Coast Guard immediately dispatched investigators to the scene to evaluate and asses the reports.

The towing vessel Omaha, which was in the vicinity of the restaurant barge at the time of a radio broadcast to mariners, was able to gain control of the restaurant barge and secure it to the river bank.

The Coast Guard along with Missouri Highway Patrol and the Boonville City Police Department are monitoring the situation and are awaiting the arrival of two local towing vessels to help regain control of the remaining drifting barge.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
