Coast Guard responds to diver in distress

CORTEZ, Fla. -The Coast Guard medically evacuated a scuba diver at approximately 6:30 p.m., Thursday about 12-miles west of Anna Maria Island.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, Fla., were notified at approximately 5:50 p.m. by a boater aboard a 23-foot Carolina Skiff anchored 12 miles west of Anna Maria Island reporting that a 52-year-old male had surfaced from diving and had become distressed, then unresponsive.

Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Cortez immediately launched, arrived on scene at approximately 6:30 p.m. and began CPR on the man.

Both men were transported to awaiting EMS at the Coquina boat ramp on Anna Maria Island, where he was prounounced deceased.

The man’s name is being withheld pending next-of-kin notifications.
