Coast Guard responds to diesel spill

The Coast Guard responded to a diesel spill on the I-5 bridge over the Columbia River in Portland, Ore., Friday.

The Coast Guard was notified at approximately 7:15 a.m. that a sheen had been spotted on the Columbia River near Jantzen Beach, Ore.

A response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Portland was able to locate the source of the spill on the I-5 bridge. A lumber truck fuel tank had been damaged and leaked approximately 30 to 50 gallons of diesel fuel.

The responsible party has contracted a commercial environmental cleanup company to remove as much of the diesel fuel from the bridge and surrounding water as possible.

The Coast Guard continues to monitor the situation.
