Coast Guard responds to capsized sailboat

LONG BEACH- The Coast Guard, with the assistance of a good Samaritan, rescued a mariner from a capsized sailboat here, Saturday.

A watchstander from Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach received a call for help shortly before 4 p.m. from a good Samaritan reporting that they had witnessed a vessel taking on water near the Long Beach break wall.

A Coast Guard 41-foot response boat was launched. The rescue boat crew arrived on scene to find a 14-foot pleasure craft capsized. The crew of the rescue boat righted the capsized vessel and dewatered it before towing it to San Pedro, Calif.

The mariner was wearing life jacket, and no injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard urges boaters to remember the importance of personal floatation devices and to always wear a life jacket when on the water.
