MIAMI — Coast Guard, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission personnel responded to a boat collision near Sands Cut at Elliot Key, Fla., on Sunday.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami were notified at approximately 6:30 p.m. Sunday that a 36-foot recreational vessel with 16 people aboard and a 28-foot boat with two people aboard near Sands Cut.
Two boatcrews from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Fla., were immediately sent to the scene.
The crew of a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue helicopter hoisted one person from the water with medical concerns, and a Coast Guard smallboat crew rescued 11 people from the water and transferred them to waiting EMS crews at Blackpoint Marina in Cutlet Bay, Fla.
The 28-foot boat capsized, and commercial salvage has been arranged for the vessel.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
