Coast Guard Responds To Barge Allision

PARKERSBURG, W. Va. – The Parkersburg Highway Bridge was closed for approximately three hours today when two barges allided with it this afternoon.

At 12:50 p.m., the tow boat Darin Adrian was pushing 12 barges up the Ohio River in the vicinity of mile marker 184 when a swift current may have caused it to hit the CSX B&O rail road bridge. Ten of the barges were pinned up against the right bank and two barges drifted away and hit the Parkersburg Highway Bridge. The Darin Adrian was able to retrieve the two barges with the help of the tow boats Carol Neel and James Murphy.

The Wood County dispatcher’s office has closed the CSX B&O Rail Road Bridge until further notice.

The Department of Transportation and the CSX Rail Road were contacted to send inspectors to assess the Parkersburg Highway Bridge and the CSX B&O Rail Road Bridge.

Coast Guard personnel from the Marine Safety Unit in Huntington, W. Va. are also investigating.
