NEW YORK – The Coast Guard is responding to the grounding of a barge on the Hudson River near Catskill, New York, Tuesday.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., a northbound tug, the Meredith Reinauer, was pushing the barge when it ran aground on the west side of the Hudson River.
There are 60,000 barrels of refined gasoline aboard the barge that ran aground.
At this time, it appears that there is no product leaking into the water and the barge’s tanks were not punctured in the incident. There are no reported injuries.
Crewmembers from Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team-Saugerties are on scene and providing assistance to the crew on the barge.
Pollution response teams and investigation officials from Coast Guard Sector New York are en route to the scene. Coast Guard Cutter Katherine Walker is also sailing to the scene. An aviation team will make a fly over of the area once weather permits.
Broadcasts are being made to mariners transiting the river. A safety zone has been established around the vessel. State and local agencies are also on scene.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
