Coast Guard responds to abandoned vessel leaking fuel in Savannah River

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Coast Guard crews responded to a report of a diesel fuel leak Saturday from the 41-foot abandoned marine vessel Net Web in the Savannah River near Augusta, Ga.

Coast Guard investigators from Marine Safety Unit Savannah worked in coordination with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Augusta Riverkeepers to clean-up and assess the pollution threat posed by the abandoned vessel. In addition, a fuel-absorbing boom was deployed around Net Web as a protective barrier for any future contaminants that may leak from the vessel.

The Coast Guard is assisting the Georgia DNR with locating the registered owner and developing a plan to remove the remaining pollutants aboard the vessel.
