Coast Guard responds to 623-foot vessel aground on the San Joaquin River

Coast Guard District 11 NewsRIO VISTA, Calif – The Coast Guard responded to a 623-foot bulk carrier that ran aground in the San Joaquin River, this morning.

The Aston Trader was not carrying any cargo, and was traveling to Stockton, Calif, when it temporarily lost control and ran aground at approximately 10:15 a.m.

Upon initial inspection by the vessel’s crew and Coast Guard units on scene, there appears to be no significant damage to the vessel. Examination of the vessel’s fuel tanks also indicates no apparent release of pollution into the water.

With the assistance of a two tugs the vessel was freed and is now moored at the Port of Stockton where it will be met by Coast Guard inspectors who will investigate the cause of the incident and inspect the vessel for damage.
