SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard responded to two people in distress off Rodeo Beach in Marin County Sunday.
At 12:22 p.m. Sunday, Coast Guard Station Golden Gate received a report of two people stuck in the surf zone after they had been swept from the rocks at Rodeo Beach, in the Marin Headlands. The Coast Guard immediately launched two 47-foot Motor Life Boat crews from Coast Guard Station Golden Gate and a rescue helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco. The Southern Marin Fire Department launched a rescue boatcrew along with two Jet Ski crews from the National Parks Service
Once on scene, Southern Marin Fire Department personnel recovered one person who was able to swim to a nearby rock. The person was reported to be in stable condition upon transport to shore.
A Station Golden Gate boatcrew recovered the second person, who was unconscious. The boatcrew conducted CPR on the victim while transporting him back to the dock. He was turned over to local EMS, which pronounced him deceased.
“It is essential for everyone to exercise extreme caution while at the beach,” said Capt. Greg Stump, commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. “This time of year is notorious for large swells and unpredictable sneaker waves.”
