SAN PEDRO, Calif. – The Coast Guard is investigating reports of a possible downed aircraft approximately 2 miles north of Redondo Beach Harbor, Saturday.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach received an emergency notification for assistance at 11:45 a.m., coming from an aircraft’s emergency location transmitter beacon. Shortly after the initial notification several witnesses reported seeing an oil sheen on the surface of the water near the Redondo Beach Harbor entrance.
Watchstanders immediately launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Forward Operating Base Point Mugu and a 45-ft Response Boast-Medium boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach. Baywatch Redondo and Los Angeles County Fire Department are assisting in the response.
