Coast Guard responding to Nashville flooding

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment here is working closely with local, state, federal and industry partners to conduct search and rescue operations and implement contingency plans to help minimize the impact of flooding.

Among those efforts include the activation Sunday of Coast Guard Disaster Assistance Response Teams (DARTs) from Cincinnati and Nashville to aid local authorities in search and rescue operations. DARTs are capable of conducting operations in shallow water and urban environments and consist of seven person crews. The DART teams are outfitted with three shallow water boats and various rescue and communications equipment and supplies.

Additionally, pre-developed high water plans coordinated in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the local shipping industry have been enacted to help ensure the safety of the public and a quick return to moving commerce.

Coast Guard crews are also standing by to assists with environmental hazards that may be caused by the flooding.

The Coast Guard urges residents to heed the warnings of local officials and not venture into unsafe conditions.
