Coast Guard responding to “mayday” near Seldovia, responding to multiple cases

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Coast Guard is currently responding to a report of a “mayday” outside of Kachemak Bay between Seldovia and Port Graham near Point Pogibshi.

The report came in just before 10 p.m. Monday. An individual was heard saying “mayday” and that they were abandoning ship into a life raft. No further communications could be established. An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) was issued. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and crew from Kodiak was diverted from another case, a Kodiak-based C-130 and crew and the Homer-based Coast Guard Auxiliary were launched.

The Auxiliary retuned to port after conducting three legs of a search pattern due to adverse weather conditions. Due to low cloud cover the C-130 was unable to conduct a search. The C-130 crew was diverted to assist with another breaking search and rescue case.

Additional searches by the helicopter crew were unsuccessful. An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter and crew from Kodiak are scheduled to conduct a first light search of the area.

Weather is currently forecast as northwest winds to 20 knot diminishing this afternoon with seas of three feet or less. A small craft advisory is in effect for the area.
