ST. LOUIS, Miss. – The Coast Guard is responding to areas affected by record high water in Scott County, Iowa, Thursday.
Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River watchstanders received a notification at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday of a temporary levee system failure resulting in rapid water inundation to four downtown city blocks in Daveport, Iowa.
The Coast Guard responded with seven members and three shallow boats to assist Scott County in transport of other response personnel and equipment in and out of the affected area.
Involved in the response are:
- Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Quad Cities Western River Flood Punt Team
- Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Peoria Western River Flood Punt Team
- Scott County Emergency Operation Center
- Scott County Fire Department
- Scott County Emergency Services
Sector Upper Mississippi River issued a no wake zone on the upper Mississippi River from mile marker 482 to 483 to prevent further damage to the levee.
“We ask everyone to please heed all flood warnings. Turn around, don’t drown,” said Lt. Jim Long, chief of contingency planning and force readiness, Sector Upper Mississippi River.
The no wake zone will be lifted as soon as conditions improve.
