PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Coast Guard is responding to a grounded barge approximately 144-feet in length that broke free from a tug boat Monday near the entrance of Port Canaveral.

The Coast Guard was notified at approximately 1:40 a.m. Monday that the barge was aground near the Port Canaveral Jetty Entrance. Shortly afterward the crew of the Tug Boat Megan Beyel confirmed that it lost control of the barge. The contents of the cargo include inert, non-explosive torpedo casings, batteries and household goods that pose no significant danger to the public.

A safety and security zone has been established in a 500-yard circumference around the vessel. The barge is currently one-quarter mile off the jetty entrance. There are no reports of pollution or impact to the channel.
