MARATHON, Fla. — The Coast Guard is responding to a disabled container ship Sunday southwest of Marathon.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West, Fla., received notification at 4:27 p.m. Sunday stating the 396-foot container ship Kaylebah had suffered an engine casualty and was adrift about 35 miles southwest of Marathon.
The Kaylebah, which was transporting fruit, was traveling from Antigua, Guatemala, to Miami when the engine casualty occurred.
Sector Key West personnel are coordinating with the crews of the Coast Guard Cutters Decisive and Key Biscayne to render assistance.
The Decisive is a 210-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Pascagoula, Miss.
The Key Biscayne is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Key West.
The Coast Guard is working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to prevent any damage to the environment.
