NEW YORK–A Coast Guard rescue crew from Station Fire Island rescued a woman from the Great South Bay after a Good Samaritan saw her jump from the Robert Moses Bridge and phoned 911 operators at 2:30 p.m. today.
The crew found her approximately 1 minute after being notified and diverted from a homeland security patrol nearby.
The victim was taken back to the station where emergency medical personnel evaluated her condition and recommended that she be airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center.
A Suffolk County Police Department helicopter that was already airborne to assist with the search transported her in stable condition to the hospital.
“This quick response clearly demonstrates the importance and great effectiveness of strong working relationships between first responders,” said Capt. Peter Boynton, Sector Long Island Sound Commanding Officer. “Every facet of the search and rescue system worked perfectly in this case, including the initial call by a Good Samaritan, an extremely quick multi-agency response and finally transfer to a medical facility via helicopter.”
