Coast Guard rescues two teens north of Kodiak on Afognak Island

JUNEAU, Alaska – A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak crew located and hoisted two overdue hunters today on Afognak Island.

The two hunters ages 15 and 16 were dropped off Sunday morning but reportedly didn’t return to the pick up point Sunday evening. The father of one of the teens reported them overdue to the CoastGuard Command Center in Anchorage at 10:21 a.m. today.

After receiving the call, the command center directed the launch of an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak launching at 11:28 a.m. The teens were found at 11:55 a.m., safely hoisted and transferred to Air Station Kodiak where local emergency medical services were waiting.

No injuries were reported. The Coast Guard always encourages all outdoor enthusiasts to put an emphasis on safety and preparedness by taking multiple means of communication and signaling devices such as radios, cell phones, transceivers and flares, and being prepared for the unexpected.
