Coast Guard Rescues Two Teenage Boys From Wilderness Area

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – An Elizabeth City, N.C., based HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew rescued two teenage boys tonight from a wilderness area in Camden County, N.C., after they had gotten lost.

The boys were lost in a wilderness area for approximately four hours, and notified 911 via cell phone. Local authorities commenced a search shortly thereafter, but lost communications. At approximately 7:57 p.m., Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City was notified by local authorities and asked if they could assist with the search. An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew conducting a routine training mission was diverted to assist the search. The boys were located at 8:57 p.m. Due to fuel shortage, a second Coast Guard Helicopter was called to the scene and hoisted the boys at 9:03 p.m., and transported them to Air Station Elizabeth City where they were met by their parents.
