NEW YORK – A Coast Guard boat crew rescued two people adrift on a piece of dock that broke loose from a marina near Hampton Bays, N.Y.
Coast Guard Station Shinnecock received notification by an eyewitness that two men were stranded and adrift on a piece of dock that broke free from Oakland’s Marina, Hampton Bays, N.Y., just before 4 p.m.
The rescue boat crew immediately launched and located the people stranded on the section of floating dock, which was drifting into Shinnecock Inlet. Both people were recovered safely and the dock was secured to land. The two men were not wearing lifejackets.
“Conditions were pretty bad out there, especially if you’re stranded on a piece of dock adrift without a lifejacket,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Peryea, the member in charge of the boat crew. “We’re happy to have helped them get back safety.”
The Coast Guard recommends that people wear a lifejacket when working on the water during bad weather. High winds and rough seas can catch anyone by surprise, and you want to be prepared.
