Coast Guard Rescues Two Off Gasparilla Sound

CHARLOTTE HARBOR, Fla. – The Coast Guard rescued two boaters from an 18-foot flats boat that ran aground about three-miles east of Boca Grande Pass in Gasparilla Sound at about 9:30 p.m., March 8.

The Coast Guard received a call at about 7 p.m., March 8, from Bob Howard, a friend of the boaters, reporting that Bill Bailey and Gerald Toledo, ages and hometowns unknown, were aboard the vessel and Toledo was suffering from a medical condition and needed immediate medical attention.

A Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach, Fla., 33-foot rescue boat, a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter, and a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) vessel arrived on scene at about 8:30 p.m., March 8, to assist in the rescue.

Toledo and Bailey were safely hoisted by the HH-60 rescue helicopter at about 9:30 p.m. and immediately transferred to Charlotte County Airport, where EMS was waiting. Toledo’s condition is unknown.
