Coast Guard rescues two men from capsized boat

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Rescue crews from Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg rescued two men Monday after their 12-foot boat overturned near the Gandy Bridge in St. Petersburg.

Hieu Trung La, 25, and Huong Nguyem, 23, were rescued after watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a phone call from Trung La at 2:45 a.m. reporting that his boat capsized near the Gandy Bridge and he and Nguyem were clinging to the bridge’s pilings.

Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg immediately launched a 25-foot response boat crew and rescued Trung La and Nguyem from the bridge pilings at about 3:10 a.m.

“The quick action our crews took today was instrumental in the rescue of these two men,” said Lt. Miguel Torrez, Sector St. Petersburg’s command duty officer. “We encourage all boaters to always wear a lifejacket and carry a working VHF marine radio onboard their vessels at all times. Cell phones are often unreliable and many times there is no coverage offshore.”

The men were transferred to local EMS at the Gandy Pier and taken to Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Fla.
