KODIAK, Alaska – The Coast Guard responded to the grounding of the 34-foot fishing vessel Pegge in Gastineau Channel across from Sheep Creek near Juneau late Tuesday night.
Coast Guard Sector Juneau command center watchstanders received the initial notification of the grounding via VHF radio from a second vessel transiting the area about 8:30 p.m. Sector Juneau command center personnel ordered the launch of a Coast Guard Station Juneau Response Boat-Small crew in response.
They arrived on scene 25 minutes later and assessed there were no injuries, damage or pollution. The vessel is listing slightly to starboard with 60 gallons of diesel reported aboard. The three-person fishing vessel crew chose to remain aboard in an effort to refloat the vessel on the morning high tide which was unsuccessful.
The crew of the Pegge maintained a communications schedule with the Coast Guard throughout the night and were removed from the fishing boat by a Station Juneau 25-foot RB-S crew following the unsuccessful refloat attempt. The crew is currently in Juneau and will return to the vessel to try to refloat again on the evening high tide.
Weather conditions were clear with calm seas and light winds at the time of the grounding. Conditions have not changed significantly since.
The fishing vessel Pegge is a trawler based out of Pelican in Southeast Alaska.
