SEATTLE – The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three people that had abandoned ship approximately seven miles northwest of Newport, Ore., Monday.
The 29-foot Sea Star called out a mayday at 6 p.m. reporting that the vessel was taking on water.
A Coast Guard HH65 dolphin helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Depoe Bay, Ore., and a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Yaquina Bay deployed to assist.
The helicopter crew located the crew of the Sea Star in a life raft. The three crewmembers were transferred to the motor lifeboats and transported safely to shore. The Sea Star sank before rescue crews arrived on scene.
There were no reported injuries and the crew of Sea Star was transported safely to shore.
