BOSTON – The Coast Guard is searching for a fisherman after his boat capsized approximately 115 miles east of Cape Cod, Mass., early this morning.
The First District Command Center in Boston received an alert from the New Bedford-based 71-foot fishing boat Costa & Corvo‘s emergency indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) around midnight.
Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England began issuing marine assistance request broadcasts over the radio asking boaters in the area to assist.
The Mary K, the Costa & Corvo’s sister ship, reported they had been fishing about two miles away when they lost sight of the Costa & Corvo.
Using the Vessel Monitoring System, Sector Southeastern New England was able to get the location of the Costa & Corvo. The Mary K arrived on scene and rescued three crewmembers from the water.
A Coast Guard rescue Jayhawk helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer to the Mary K to evaluate the three rescued crewman and found they were in stable condition. They remain on the Mary K which is no longer on scene.
Jayhawk helicopter and Falcon Jet crews from Air Station Cape Cod searched the scene for the fourth fisherman until needing to return to base for fuel.
Another helicopter crew wass scheduled to arrive on scene around 7:30 a.m. The Coast Guard Cutters Seneca and Grand Isle are also en route to the area.
“Fortunately for the crewmen, we were able to locate the boat using VMS and the Mary K was nearby and able to assist,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Scott Leazott, a search and rescue controller from Sector Southeastern New England. “We are hopeful to find the fourth fisherman.”
