Coast Guard rescues stranded kayaker from South Carolina marsh

639050DEWEES ISLAND, S.C. — The Coast Guard rescued a stranded kayaker in the vicinity of Dewees Island Wednesday.

Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Charleston, S.C., command center received the initial report at 8:27 a.m., from Charleston Consolidated 911 Dispatch Center stating that a 19-year-old male was stranded in the marsh after taking a ride on his kayak.

A crew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston was launched to respond. Upon arriving on scene, the aircrew hoisted the man and examined his condition. He was found to be suffering symptoms of dehydration.

Additional assistance came from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and Charleston County Rescue.

The kayaker was taken to Medical University of South Carolina for further evaluation.
