Coast Guard rescues stranded campers from Santa Cruz Island

CHANNEL ISLANDS, Calif. — The Coast Guard responded to a report from a passing good Samaritan of four stranded campers on Santa Cruz Island late Thursday night, November 26th.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach command center dispatched a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands and an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles to the scene.

The campers reported their boat had drifted offshore while they were setting up camp. The lost vessel was quickly discovered by the Coast Guard boat while transiting to assist. Upon arriving on scene, one of the campers was taken aboard the 47-foot Motor Life Boat and transported to the drifting vessel.

The remaining three campers were eventually reunited with their boat and escorted by the Coast Guard back to Channel Islands Harbor.

Boaters are reminded to travel with an effective means of communication and check the condition of their boat and all its safety equipment whenever heading out to sea.
