Coast Guard Rescues Spear Fisherman

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Coast Guard medevaced a 26-year-old man from the Gulf of Mexico 20 miles north east Port Mansfield, Texas, this morning.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi received a mayday call from a three divers on board a 22-foot motor boat at 10 a.m. today. The men reported that while spear fishing their friend returned to the surface unconscious after free diving. The divers immediately began Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and contacted the Coast Guard for assistance.

Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew to medevac the man. The helicopter crew arrived on scene, hoisted the injured man and transported him to Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi.

The man was reported to be in critical condition.
