Coast Guard rescues overdue boater in the Gulf of Mexico

Coast Guard 8th District NewsNEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard rescued a Hopedale, La., native in the Gulf of Mexico, after the man was reported missing, Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office at 10:30 p.m., reporting that a man in a 17-foot, aluminum skiff was overdue after he was expected to return that afternoon.

Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans launched an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter and crew to the scene and located the missing man as he signaled to the crew with a handheld spotlight. The crew hoisted the man and transported him to Air Station New Orleans.

“It’s not easy to find someone on the water and it’s even harder at night,” said Lt. Caitlin Mitchellwurster, public affairs officer for Air Station New Orleans. “That’s why we encourage all mariners to have a signalling device onboard whenever they get underway.”

His condition is unknown.
