Coast Guard rescues missing N.C. boaters and dog

ATLANTIC, N.C. – A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued two missing men and their dog Saturday morning off the Core Sound banks near Atlantic.

The men left Atlantic at 10 a.m. Friday and planned to fish in the Core Sound area from Nelson Bay to Turnagain Bay aboard a 17-foot Galaxy craft boat.

The boat owner’s wife called Sector North Carolina watchstanders for help Friday at 9:20 p.m., after the men did not return and could not be located.

“The Coast Guard helicopter crew located the two men just off core banks waving their arms for help,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Jason Frivance, a Sector North Carolina watchstander.

Both men, along with their dog, were hoisted into the helicopter in good condition and taken to Beaufort air field to meet their family.

The following units were involved in the search: Station Fort Macon and Station Hobucken rescue boat crews, an Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crew, a Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Pedro helicopter crew and Sea Level Fire and Rescue personnel.

Sector North Carolina is transmitted an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast to notify and enlist the help of any other boaters in the area.
