Coast Guard Rescues Missing Kayaker

 CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources  rescued a missing kayaker one-mile east of SeaBrook Island, S.C., yesterday at 6:30 p.m.

A Coast Guard helicopter rescue crew from Air Facility Charleston located Joe Stevenat, 20, and vectored at rescue crew form South Carolina DNR to pick him up. Stevenat was transferred to emergency medical services at Cherry Point Boat Ramp, S.C., in stable condition suffering from mild dehydration.

Stevenat left his father’s sailing vessel at approximately 2:30 p.m. to paddle his kayak near the mouth of the North Edisto River, S.C.  After not returning, Stevenat’s father called 911at about 4:30 p.m. The dispatcher contacted the Coast Guard.

Coast Guard rescue coordinators launched a rescue helicopter and a rescue boat crew. Crews from Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston County Rescue, South Carolina DNR assisted in the search.

Seas where the rescue took place were four- to-six foot seas, and there were 10- to-20 MPH winds.

The Coast Guard rescued 28 people in the Southeast and Caribbean Sea yesterday.
