Coast Guard rescues missing kayaker
CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. – A joint-agency search effort resulted in the rescue of a kayaker here this morning.

Coast Guard Station Chincoteague, Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., the Virginia Marine Resource Commission and the Virginia State Police searched through Wednesday night for Tom Moorhead, 42, a native of College Park Md.

Coast Guard Station Chincoteague was notified shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday by Moorhead’s family after he did not return to his vacation home at a pre-arranged time.

A 23-foot boat crew from Station Chincoteague rescued Tom Moorehead at approximately 9 a.m. today after an HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City located him this morning. Moorhead was taken to a local hospital for treatment of slight lacerations and exhaustion.

Sector Field Office Eastern Shore, located in Chincoteague, developed and coordinated search patterns for the agencies involved in the search.

Moorhead fought against strong winds for several hours and drifted approximately five miles from his original intended track. Moorhead took refuge in an abandon duck blind for the night.

“Thanks to great search planning and outstanding local agency cooperation, this case had a positive outcome,” said Chief Petty Officer Rick Ball, officer in charge of Station Chincoteague.
