Coast Guard rescues missing cruise ship passenger

MIAMI – A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Miami rescued a 62-year-old man who went overboard from a cruise ship about 20 miles east of Miami Sunday morning.

Search and rescue coordinators at Coast Guard Sector Miami received a call from operators aboard the luxury cruise ship, Silver Shadow, at around 3 a.m. Sunday, reporting the passenger Ronald Shulman went overboard.

The Silver Shadow remained on scene to assist with the search and located Shulman swimming about 20 miles southeast of Government Cut around 7:45 a.m. The helicopter crew flew to Shulman’s position and lowered a rescue swimmer. The swimmer helped Shulman into the ships rescue boat and assisted the ships medical team with assessing Shulman’s condition.

Assisting with the search were:

  • The 110-foot Cutter Dolphin, homported in Miami.
  • MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Miami.
  • Crews aboard Miami-Dade Fire Boat 1.
