Coast Guard Rescues Mariner with Broken Leg

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., airlifted an injured crewmember from the motor vessel Barra, 80 miles south of Cape Lookout, N.C., this afternoon.

The Coast Guard was notified at approximately 3:45 p.m. today that Manuel Ruiz, a 64-year-old crewmember aboard the 595-foot Panamanian-flagged vessel, had suffered a broken left leg and required medical attention.

Ruiz was flown to Carteret County Hospital in Morehead City, N.C., for treatment.
