Coast Guard Rescues Man Off Cypress Point

SAN FRANCISCO, Calf. – The Coast Guard rescued a man from his 46 foot sailing vessel BOBBY MCGEE at approximately 4:00 am off Cypress Point in Carmel Cove.

Shortly after 2:00 am, Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a radio distress call of a vessel taking on water in Carmel Cove.

The Coast Guard immediately launched a HH65 helicopter and 47 foot motor life boat from Station Monterey, issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and notified local and National Marine Sanctuary officials.

At 3:40 am the Coast Guard helicopter deployed a rescue swimmer who safely made his way to the sailing vessel, which was on the rocks, rescued the one person on board and brought him to shore.

The Coast Guard is working with the vessel owner to determine a salvage plan for the vessel which has approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel on board.
