Coast Guard rescues man near the Shackleford Banks, NC

Coast Guard 24-foot Special Purpose Craft - Shallow WaterBEAUFORT, N.C.– The Coast Guard rescued a 65-year-old man in the back sound of Shackleford Banks after receiving a distress call from the man’s friend, Tuesday.

At 9:06 a.m., Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders received a distress call from the man’s friend in an adjacent boat, reporting that the man had fallen overboard his 17-foot pleasure craft. The man was not wearing a life jacket and was seen going under the water and not resurfacing.

A 24-foot Response Boat crew from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon arrived on scene at 9:25 a.m. The rescue crew located the man, who was unconscious when they pulled him out of the water.

The boat crew started rescue breathing and chest compressions while in route to waiting Emergency Medical Service personnel at the Coast Guard station. The rescue crew transferred the man to EMS who took the man to Carteret Hospital in Morehead City.
