Coast Guard rescues man in Destin Harbor

DESTIN, Fla. – The Coast Guard rescued a man who fell off a pier into Destin Harbor, Tuesday, at about 4 a.m.

Rescued was Martin Novak, 29.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile, Ala., watchstanders received notification from the Santa Rosa County Emergency Medical Services dispatch at approximately 3:30 a.m., stating witnesses had reported that Novak had entered the water and disappeared from sight.

A Coast Guard Station Destin, Fla., 41-foot utility boat (UTB) crew arrived on scene and brought Novak aboard safely.

“He was probably 50 yards form the pier; he was conscious,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Matt Huber, Station Destin, a member of the rescue crew. “He was fortunate, because it was very dark and hard to see him. A boat could easily have run over him.”

EMS released Novak who did not require medical assistance.
