Coast Guard rescues Kodiak hiker from Spruce Island

KODIAK, Alaska – The Coast Guard rescued a hiker from Spruce Island located about 12 miles north of Kodiak Thursday morning after he became lost in the woods.

John Peterson, 18, resident of Kodiak was reported missing by a friend Wednesday night after he did not return from exploring the island and surrounding woods.

The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Juneau received a call from Alaska State Troopers about 3:30 a.m. requesting assistance in locating Peterson. He was reported last seen in Ouzinkie Village between 7 p.m. and 8:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Alaska State Troopers and local residents searched the area but were unsuccessful in locating Peterson. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak received a call for assistance and launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and crew to assist in the search.

Peterson was located by the aircrew and hoisted at approximately 6:45 a.m. The helicopter crew reported Peterson was in good condition and delivered him safely to Ouzinkie Village.
