SAN FRANCISCO – A multi-agency response rescued five people off the Candlestick Point State Recreation Area Saturday.
Two pre-teens in an 8-foot rowboat were blown off the beach into San Francisco Bay near Candlestick Point State Recreation Area. Three adults who witnessed the event attempted to swim after the boat to assist, but were unable to get back to shore.
The Coast Guard Sector San Francisco command center received the call at 4:31 p.m. from the San Francisco Emergency Dispatch. Multiple vessels responded from San Francisco Fire and Police, and South San Francisco Fire Department along with a helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco.
The Tug Yaquina was passing through the area when they sighted the rowboat and alerted the rescue boats to the location.
A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium rescue crew from Coast Guard Station San Francisco recovered the two children and one adult with mild hypothermia. They were transported to the Oyster Point Marina, evaluated by South San Francisco Fire Department Emergency Medical Specialists and released. San Francisco Marine Unit recovered the remaining adults and returned them to Candlestick Point.
