NEW YORK – The Coast Guard rescued five people from their sinking vessel 7 miles south of New Haven Harbor, Conn., at approximately 10 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, 2011.
The Coast Guard received a mayday call over VHF channel 16 from the passengers aboard a 32-foot pleasure craft stating that they were taking on water in Long Island Sound. Weather conditions at the time were 25-knot winds and 3-6 foot seas.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station New Haven was dispatched, arriving on scene and transferring the passengers safely aboard just as their own vessel was sinking. They were dropped off at a marina in Bradford, Conn.
