Coast Guard rescues eight fishermen from sinking boat

11th Coast Guard District NewsSAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard rescued eight fishermen from a sinking fishing boat 30 miles south of Point Loma at around 12:04 p.m., August 20, 2011.

Coast Guard Sector San Diego initially received a distress call from the owner of the 45-foot fishing boat Osprey that black smoke was coming from the engine and the boat was taking on water at 10:38 a.m.

Sector San Diego immediately issued an urgent broadcast to mariners in the area to assist the crew of the Osprey.

A Coast Guard rescue helicopter arrived on scene shortly after the initial call and lowered a dewatering pump to the crew; however the pump was unable to keep up with the water.

A rescue helicopter crew hoisted all eight crewmembers after the Osprey began to emit black smoke from its engine compartment.

The Osprey sunk shortly after the men were air lifted back to Sector San Diego.

No injuries were reported.
