SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued a distressed surfer at Cliff House Cove near the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Tuesday afternoon.

At 2:55 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report of a surfer in distress attempting to paddle back to shore.

The Coast Guard issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast to mariners in the area to be on the lookout.

Coast Guard Station Golden Gate launched a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew and a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco. San Francisco Fire Department personnel also responded.

The Coast Guard boatcrew arrived on scene, recovered the surfer and safely transported him to shore. No medical treatment was required.

“The high readiness posture of the Coast Guard Station Golden Gate crew ensured the quick recovery of the distressed surfer,” said Lt. Cmdr. Shawn Lansing, search-and-rescue mission coordinator for Sector San Francisco. “Additionally, the importance of good Samaritans reporting people in distress in the maritime environment cannot be overstated.”
